The National Volunteering Week –for the 1st time in Moldova
[23-29 April, 2007]
Service for Peace actively involved in planning the 1st edition of The National Volunteering Week.
Great expectations have been always realized if they were completed by initiative, work and perseverance. One of the humankind’s most important hope that ever was that’s prosperity, or the progress, which can be brought about only by a succession of constructive reforms. In this case, a great significance has the voluntary involvement of each person in solving the community’s problems. Volunteering has already become a phenomenon that has the goal to direct towards a new way of thinking, opened for change and efficient involvement.
Today, due to their social importance, and increasing number of organizations implement activities based on voluntary work as well as they organize events in order to stimulate and to encourage the volunteering, especially among the youth.
In this context, The Coalition for Law and Volunteering Promotion (from which SFP takes part) in partnership with the Ministry of Education and The General Department of Education, Youth and Sports of Municipal Council of Chisinau appointed the National Volunteering Week (NVW), during the period of 23rd-29th of April 2007.
The event happened for the first time in Moldova. NVW was dedicated to all active volunteers from the country, those that get involved in volunteer activities, promoting this concept on the mutual coexistence.
During this week, the SFP volunteers were involved in many activities. The program included: Tuesday, 23rd of April, supporting the activity named „Easter for everyone”, organized by Association “Youth for the right to live” consisting of distribution of baskets with food to some persons that are immobilized or have a difficult material situation from Chisinau. Volunteer teams went to them, not only to bear the baskets, but also to discuss with them and offer them a moment of joy.
NVW continued on Wednesday at the Republican Asylum, organized by the SFP volunteers, which often visit them. The volunteers’ goal was to offer to the old a moment of fun that was consisting of discussion, jokes, songs and funny games.
On Thursday and Friday the volunteers organized street campaigns for informing and distributing materials, in order to initiate the population about the voluntary work and to promote the concept and the practice of volunteering. The campaigns were held in Chisinau’s area Ciocana and the Center.
On Friday and Saturday took place “Spring of Service” project in Sarata Galbena, Hincesti district. This action was launched by young people from there. They and a team of volunteers from SFP and YCW have participated. The program included in the first day the cleaning of the river and planting trees on its bank. On the second day – cleaning of the central road and installing the trash bins. At the end, the participants arranged a concert and they mentioned the importance of the activity for the community. The town hall gave diplomas to the participants and thanked them for their work.
NVW proved that is a good manifestation. It had a good impact, not only upon the new generation, but upon the old one too. The volunteers’ pleasure is bigger when they find around them the spirit of solidarity, of desire and motivation, which determine more and more people to join with them in planning common activities.

Reflection:
“If you can imagine haw feels a pilgrim which wanders in the desert, tired and thirsty … and suddenly, magically someone appears and gives him to drink… So, you can imagine how I felt today too.
It was the day when the gap from my heart was filled. It was a big day, because I met them, they impressed me and let me to be with them.
Today I had the possibility to participate to Service for Peace activities; I visited the Asylum from Chisinau. It was an important experience for me. It was just impossible to describe all these emotions. There were some moments when I tried not to cry. I couldn’t look in their eyes without excitement. Their clear eyes full with wisdom and sadness, loneliness and pain at the same time seem to hide the mystery of their destinies. I had the opportunity to discuss with few old men and after that I got many wise advices for my life.
The activity was social celebration were we knitted, crocheted and changed the experience. I admired all the hand made things and I listened to all their stories.
Through these confessions I entered in the universe of each hero. Except these we sang and danced. The women remembered old songs, learnt from their grand-parents. It is a true wealth for the soul.
Thinking about youth, they danced a Romanian round dance. At the end we all were excited.
Long time ago I didn’t feel such a spiritual pleasure, because the greatest satisfaction is when you offer a smile, a good word, a hug, a dance, especially when you see the joy in their eyes.”
